Le Roy (town), New York

Le Roy is a town located in Genesee County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,790.

The Town of Le Roy was incorporated in 1812 and lies on the eastern edge of Genesee County. Within the town is a village, also called Le Roy.

Le Roy is the birthplace of Jell-O gelatine dessert.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 109.2 km² (42.2 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,790 people, 3,037 households, and 2,034 families residing in the town. The population density is 71.3/km² (184.7/mi²). There are 3,219 housing units at an average density of 29.5/km² (76.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.01% White, 1.87% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 0.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,037 households out of which 31.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.3% are married couples living together, 9.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% are non-families. 26.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $39,690, and the median income for a family is $49,189. Males have a median income of $36,810 versus $23,024 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,342. 5.6% of the population and 3.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.0% of those under the age of 18 and 10.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
