The lanthanide series comprises the 14 rare earth elements from cerium to lutetium on the periodic table, with atomic numbers 58 through 71. The lanthanide series is named after lanthanum, and this element is often included in the series by convention. All Lanthanides are f-block elements except lutetium. A strict correlation between periodic table blocks and chemical series would include lanthanum in the series and place lutetium in the transition metals. This approach is gaining some popularity.
Lanthanides are chemically similar to each other, to scandium and yttrium, and to the actinides. The lanthanides are typically placed below the main body of the periodic table in the manner of a footnote. The full-width version of the periodic table shows the position of the lanthanides more clearly.
