The Lane Transit District (LTD) is a public agency that provides public transportation to the Eugene, Oregon metropolitian area (which is in Lane County), including the neighboring cities of Springfield, Junction City, Creswell, and Cottage Grove. LTD began service in 1970 with 20 vehicles, but today provides over 20,000 bus trips a week. Many of LTD's riders are students; University of Oregon and Lane Community College students ride for free. Both programs are subsidized by student fees.
LTD is in the process of building a bus rapid transit line from downtown Eugene to downtown Springfield. It is scheduled to begin operations in 2006.
LTD is governed by a board of directors, whose members are appointed by the governor of Oregon. LTD is funded by a combination of payroll taxes and state and federal funding.
