Lake Township is a township located in Benzie County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 635. The township is irregularly shaped, following the shore of Lake Michigan from Crystal Lake north to Leelanau County. A portion of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is located in the northern end of the township.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 91.0 km² (35.1 mi²). 61.3 km² (23.7 mi²) of it is land and 29.7 km² (11.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 32.64% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 635 people, 318 households, and 227 families residing in the township. The population density is 10.4/km² (26.8/mi²). There are 1,106 housing units at an average density of 18.0/km² (46.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 98.43% White, 0.00% African American, 0.79% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 0.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 318 households out of which 10.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.9% are married couples living together, 1.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% are non-families. 24.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
