The station is located at King Street and Commonwealth Avenue. It is above ground and across the street from Alexandria Union Station, together with which it serves Old Town Alexandria and as a transit hub for the city as a whole. Free bus service is available to the Old Town area. For those choosing to walk, it is a 12 block walk to King and Washington Streets. Service began on December 17, 1983.
