Kal Ho Naa Ho is a Bollywood blockbuster, set in New York City. It was released worldwide on November 27, 2003.
The movie stars Shah Rukh Khan, who sustained a major injury to his back early in the shooting but continued with the filming. He plays a guardian-angel character to various New Yorkers. There's a romantic triangle formed with characters played by Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan. Jaya Bhaduri is also notable as a Christian mother. We also get to see a glimpse of the director's muse Kajol and her cousin Rani Mukherji in the song "Maahi Ve".
This movie follows in the mold of Dil Chahta Hai, another movie which blends Bollywood and Hollywood movie conventions, to make a movie in an Indian mold, but missing some of Bollywood's common idiosyncrasies. Its production values are comparable to, or perhaps even better than, a typical Hollywood movie. While this movie was directed by first-timer Nikhil Advani, it was produced and co-written by Karan Johar, who also directed the blockbusters Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, using many of the same actors.
The film won several popular Filmfare Awards including Best Actress (Zinta), Supporting Actor (Saif Ali Khan), Supporting Actress (Bachchan), Music Direction (Shankar Ehasaan Loy), Lyrics (Javed Akhtar), Male Playback Singer (Sonu Nigam for "Kal Ho Naa Ho"), but lost out Best Film, Best Actor and Best Director to Rakesh Roshan's Koi Mil Gaya.
While copyright violation has long tended to run rampant in the Bollywood film industry, this movie is notable for having licensed the rights for Roy Orbison's Oh, Pretty Woman, for an extended musical sequence taking place in the streets in New York.
The title of this movie may be translated to "Tomorrow may be there, or might not be there"
