Jersey Post
|
Jersey Post is the official state-owned mail service for the island of Jersey. It covers the postcode area JE, which was only established in the early 1990s. Previously, Jersey, along with Guernsey and the Isle of Man, did not have postcodes at all.
History
Jersey Post was established in 1969 when the British Government by Order in Council enabled the Crown Dependencies the right to have separate postal services within the British postal system. Consequently, UK postage stamps ceased to be valid in the Crown Dependencies.
Current status
In the last few years, people have criticised the high price of postage (34p for UK service compared with 30p on the UK mainland, although it cost 42p for up to 100g on the mainland) and poor service that Jersey Post have given. However, there have never been any plans for privatization of Jersey Post, nor for opening up the sector to competition. Jersey Post has come to the modern age with a free webmail service called JerseyMail.
