Jerry Magee
|
Sports columnist Jerry Magee was called "an American Football League apologist" by his contemporaries who covered NFL football. Eventually, he adopted that sobriquet as a badge of honor. At every opportunity, Magee took on NFL apologists like William Wallace of the New York Times and Jerry Green of the Detroit Free Press, puncturing NFL myths. Writing for the San Diego Union and Pro Football Weekly, Magee also brought national attention and enlightenment to the AFL's style of football. Like Larry Felser and Will McDonough, in his service on the pro football hall of fame board of selectors, he lent strong support to the candidacy of AFL players, enhanced by his first-hand knowledge of their accomplishments. As a contributor, Jerry Magee is a member of the American Football League Hall of Fame.
