Ironwood Township is a township in Gogebic County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 2,330.
The City of Ironwood is at the south end of the township, but is politically independent. Most of the land in the township is within the Ottawa National Forest. The Montreal River is the western boundary, with Wisconsin on the other side. Wakefield Township is on the east and Bessemer Township on the south (along with Ironwood).
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 489.0 km² (188.8 mi²). 454.3 km² (175.4 mi²) of it is land and 34.7 km² (13.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.10% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,330 people, 1,024 households, and 699 families residing in the township. The population density is 5.1/km² (13.3/mi²). There are 1,609 housing units at an average density of 3.5/km² (9.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.38% White, 0.04% African American, 0.69% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.90% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 1.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,024 households out of which 25.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% are non-families. 28.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.76.
In the township the population is spread out with 20.7% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 27.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $36,053, and the median income for a family is $42,311. Males have a median income of $31,538 versus $20,179 for females. The per capita income for the township is $18,702. 10.5% of the population and 7.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.1% of those under the age of 18 and 10.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
