Bessemer Township is a township in Gogebic County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 1,270.
Communities
- The City of Bessemer is situated within the township, but is politically independent.
- Ramsay is an unincorporated community within the township at Template:Coor dms. It is on the Black River just south of U.S. Highway 2 a few miles west of Wakefield and a few miles east of Bessemer.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 298.9 km² (115.4 mi²). 294.8 km² (113.8 mi²) of it is land and 4.0 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.35% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,270 people, 578 households, and 362 families residing in the township. The population density is 4.3/km² (11.2/mi²). There are 946 housing units at an average density of 3.2/km² (8.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.24% White, 0.39% African American, 0.71% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 0.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 578 households out of which 22.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% are married couples living together, 8.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% are non-families. 34.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.79.
In the township the population is spread out with 19.3% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 28.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 107.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.6 males.
