Iron County is a county located in the state of Wisconsin. As of 2000, the population is 6,861. Its county seat is Hurley6.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,381 km² (919 mi²). 1,961 km² (757 mi²) of it is land and 420 km² (162 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 17.62% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,861 people, 3,083 households, and 1,960 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (9/mi²). There are 5,706 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.28% White, 0.09% Black or African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 0.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,083 households out of which 22.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.00% are married couples living together, 7.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.40% are non-families. 32.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.19 and the average family size is 2.74.
In the county, the population is spread out with 19.40% under the age of 18, 5.90% from 18 to 24, 24.70% from 25 to 44, 26.80% from 45 to 64, and 23.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 96.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.80 males.
