Inlet, New York

Inlet is a town located in Hamilton County, New York in the United States of America. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 406.

The Town of Inlet was formed in 1901 from the north part of the Town of Morehouse. The town is on the western border of the county.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 172.0 km² (66.4 mi²). 161.3 km² (62.3 mi²) of it is land and 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.19% water.

The west town line is the border of Herkimer County, New York.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 406 people, 188 households, and 128 families residing in the town. The population density is 2.5/km² (6.5/mi²). There are 1,003 housing units at an average density of 6.2/km² (16.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.31% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.25% Pacific Islander, 3.20% from other races, and 0.25% from two or more races. 2.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 188 households out of which 22.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.6% are married couples living together, 5.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 29.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.59.

In the town the population is spread out with 18.2% under the age of 18, 3.0% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 30.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 106.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $32,574, and the median income for a family is $37,361. Males have a median income of $29,063 versus $15,625 for females. The per capita income for the town is $21,076. 13.2% of the population and 7.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.4% of those under the age of 18 and 11.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Communities and locations in Inlet

  • Cascade Lake -- A small lake in the northern corner of the town.
  • Fourth Lake -- A large lake shared between the Town of Inlet and Herkimer County, New York. The lake is part of a series of lakes known as the Fulton Chain Lakes.
  • Inlet -- The hamlet of Inlet is on the eastern tip of Fourth Lake. Inlet is the only significant community in this town and is located on Route 28.

Adjacent towns and areas

Inlet forms its western border with the Towns of Ohio and Webb in Herkimer County. To the south is the Town of Morehouse. The Town of Long Lake forms the northern and eastern boundary.
