Hobart International Airport

Hobart International Airport is the primary passenger and freight airport of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. It is located at Cambridge, just 20 km east of Hobart.
The airport opened in 1956, replacing the nearby Cambridge Aerodrome as the state's primary airport. Since then, the airport has undergone numerous upgrades, including runway lengthening, new terminal buildings, and in 1986 the opening of the international terminal building. In 1998 the airport was privatised, now being owned by a group known as Hobart International Airport Pty Ltd. In 2004 the airport will again undergo major redevelopments to the domestic terminal and car park, to help serve the ever increasing number of tourists visiting the state.
National airlines Qantas, Virgin Blue and JetStar travel to the airport, with direct flights to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane available. As of August 2004 Virgin Blue has introduced 3 flights a week to Adelaide. Jetstar as also introduced more flights. Local specialty airline TasAir performs scenic flights, and intrastate flights, including the Bass Strait islands. Altogether it caters for over 17000 flights a year.
Although the airport has not had a regular international passenger service since the 1980s (the destination being Christchurch, New Zealand), the official name of Hobart International Airport remains. Occasional international charter flights from Singapore Airlines fly to and from the airport. As such, the airport maintains its international terminal building, customs and immigration facilities.
The Australian Antarctic Division also intends to use the airport as a base for Antarctic flights.
