Hadley, New York

Hadley is a town located in Saratoga County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,971.

The Town of Hadley is in the northern part of the county.

History

The town was formed from parts of the Towns of Greenfield and Northumberland in 1801. In 1930 the Conklingville Dam by the west town line helped create the Sacandaga Reservoir and controlled flooding.

Geography

The town is within the Adirondack State Park. The north and east town lines are the border of Warren County, New York.

A small part of the eastern end of the Great Sacandaga Lake (formerly the "Sacandaga Reservoir") is by the west town line and the Sacandaga River divides the town laterally and enters the Hudson River by the east town line.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 106.4 km² (41.1 mi²). 103.0 km² (39.8 mi²) of it is land and 3.5 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.26% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,971 people, 730 households, and 538 families residing in the town. The population density is 19.1/km² (49.6/mi²). There are 990 housing units at an average density of 9.6/km² (24.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.77% White, 1.01% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 0.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 730 households out of which 35.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.8% are married couples living together, 10.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% are non-families. 19.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 99.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $38,150, and the median income for a family is $42,438. Males have a median income of $35,694 versus $21,810 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,560. 9.2% of the population and 6.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.9% of those under the age of 18 and 9.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Stewart's Dam -- A dam on the Sacandaga River, creating Stewart Bridge Reservoir.
