Gilmore Township is a township located in Benzie County, in the US state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 850. The township is "L"-shaped, with the city of Frankfort and village of Elberta located along Lake Michigan in the western portion of the township. The remainder of the township forms a thin slice between Crystal Lake Township to the north and Blaine Township to the south.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 19.4 km² (7.5 mi²). 18.8 km² (7.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.07% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 850 people, 341 households, and 236 families residing in the township. The population density is 45.3/km² (117.2/mi²). There are 439 housing units at an average density of 23.4/km² (60.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.06% White, 0.35% African American, 0.71% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 1.53% from two or more races. 0.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 341 households out of which 32.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.4% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% are non-families. 26.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.98.
In the township the population is spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 101.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.7 males.
