Template:Mergewith A Gerber File is a standard file used by Printed Circuit Board fabrication houses that contains information necessary for computer controlled machines to draw wires, drill holes, mill, and cut the PCB. It is named after the Gerber Scientific Instrument Company, a pioneer in photoplotter manufacturing. These files are produced by PCB designers using specialized Electronic Design Automation or EDA software, such as Orcad Layout, Mentor Expedition or Cadence |Allegro. Since a PCB may have many layers, a Gerber file is created for each of the layers. Gerber file data is in the Gerber file format, which is a data structure consisting of X, Y coordinates and commands specifying the PCB image data, the shapes and sizes of lines, holes and other information. The Gerber format is a subset of the EIA RS-274D or RS-274X formats. The Gerber file extension is .gbx
