Gants Hill is a place in the London Borough of Redbridge in East London through which runs the A12 (Eastern avenue). The A406 (North Circular Road) used to terminate here, but the easternmost part of the A406 (Woodford Avenue) has now been re-named the A1400 and a new section of the A406 has been built through Redbridge and Ilford to Barking.
The A12 runs east-west, and the A123 (Cranbrook Road) runs north-south, through Gants Hill roundabout, also the endpoint of the A1400. It is one of the busiest junctions in London. Gants Hill tube station is underneath the roundabout.
There are many shops, restaurants and pubs in Gants Hill, as well as a hotel, Valentines High School, Valentines Park and Gearies School. The Odeon cinema (originally the Savoy) was demolished in 2004 to provide space for a block of flats.
The Odeon stood between Eastern Avenue and Perth Road. The latter is the main road of the Commonwealth Estate, where all the roads are named after cities in former British colonies, from Aden to Toronto, to Perth.
The name Gants Hill comes from Richard le Gant, who is recorded as living there in 1285.
