Galatasaray

Galatasaray Spor Kulübü (Galatasaray Sports Club) is a Turkish sports club based in İstanbul which is most famous for its football section. Founded in 1905 by Ali Sami Yen, Galatasaray currently has 15 Turkish league championships, and also won the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in 2000.

Galatasaray is the only team that has won the UEFA Cup without being beaten in a single match, and is also notable for being the first team to win the competition after having been knocked out of the Champions League. In winning the UEFA Cup during the 1999/2000 season, beating Arsenal of England on penalties, Galatasaray became the first Turkish club ever to win a European trophy.

The club is the most internationally recognised Turkish club as a result of its domination of its domestic league and frequent appearances in international club competitions over the past decade. The club is also one of the biggest clubs in Turkey - the most popular after Fenerbahçe. The other arch-rival is Beşiktaş.

Galatasaray is famous for its outstandingly enthusiastic home support, especially for its supporters' habit of displaying enormous banners throughout its ground, welcoming visiting teams "to Hell!" The club's ground, Ali Sami Yen Stadyumu, reopened for the 2004-05 season, although a massive renovation project is still in progress.

Socio-economics

The question of the popularity of Galatasaray in Turkey in comparison to Fenerbahçe is due to a socio-economical fact based upon the relation between crowds' socio-economical statutes and the football teams they support, similar to the ones existing largely in most of European countries, such as the one in England between FC Chelsea as the club backed by an industry giant and Tottenham as the club of the miners who live by modest salaries; or the other one in Spain with Real Madrid as the union of all-stars and Barcelona FC as the representative of the inhabitants of the Catalan region, who once opposed the tyranny of Franco in the recent Spanish history, thus emphasizing a more proud and historical stand than the power of cash money needed to make the best transfers.

So, the point which resumes the question of popularity between the archrivals Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe in Turkey emerges from that same source : the difference between the social statutes. Galatasaray is the club founded and currently represented by Istanbul's (and Turkey's if generalised) best-educated, aristocratic and elite level; while Fenerbahçe represents, and that very naturally, probably a crowd bigger in number, embracing people from the whole spectrum of the Turkish socio-economical levels, including poor youngs and rich but not-noble-origined businessmen who came to the metropolis of Istanbul from the inner cities of Anatolia -and that not to underestimate them, but just to point out the difference- during their youth and grew powerful in business in Istanbul but dispossessed of half of a member of the Galatasaray society's cultural background; shortly, the class of bourgeoisie.

All in all, considering that the difference of the population volumes between these two levels is a very common, clear and natural reality appearing in all societies, it should be clarified that the grandeur of Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe cannot be compared by the easy and ridiculous pretext of "having the greatest number of national fans", which also is not approved professionally by the study a big and trustable statistics company yet, but only by the sum of their international successes, which is the modern measure of success between today's football clubs, at which Galatasaray has proved far better than its "national archrival", with a clear difference of two European cups against a number of EVEN ZERO QUARTER FINALS PLAYED.

The real international statistics show the real difference.
