The current state flag of Victoria in Australia was officially adopted in 1953.

The flag is based on the defaced British Blue Ensign with the state badge located in the fly. The badge is the Southern Cross with the St Edwards Crown situated above the Southern Cross. The stars of the Southern Cross are white and range from five to eight points with each star having one point pointing to the top of the flag.

As with the Queensland flag, the design of the Royal Crown in the badge is changed whenever there is a change in monarch. The last change occurred in 1953 with the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1952 when she chose the St Edwards Crown.

Previous Flags

The first flag of Victoria was adopted in 1870. It too was a defaced British Blue Ensign with the Southern Cross located in the fly. The stars of the Southern Cross are white and range from five to eight points with each star having one point pointing to the bottom of the flag. The adoption of the flag came about when Victoria became the first Australian colony to acquire a warship, and thus under the British Colonial Naval Defence Act of 1865 Victoria needed a flag to distinguish its ships from other British ships.

Victoria then adopted a second flag in 1877 and is almost identical to the current flag of Victoria. The only difference was that the crown was the Imperial Crown worn by Queen Victoria.

Victoria then adopted a third flag c. 1901 and was almost identical to both the current and previous flags of Victoria. The only differences was that the crown was the Tudor Crown worn by Kings Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII and George VI, and within this period the stars were modified so that one point of each star pointed to the top of the flag.
