Fencing at the 1896 Summer Olympics

At the 1896 Summer Olympics, three fencing events were contested. They were prepared and organized by the Sub-Committee for Fencing. The epee event for men was cancelled. All fencing was done to three touches.

Perikles Pierrakos-Mavromichalis (GRE)

The foil contest was held on the second day of competition, 7 April. Eight fencers took place, with the preliminary fencing involving a round-robin held in two groups. The first group was Pierrakos-Mavromichalis, Delaborde, Callot, and Poulos. The second was Miliotis, Balakakis, Gravelotte, and Vouros. The two fencers that were undefeated in their groups faced each other in the final for gold and silver medals, while Pierrakos-Mavromichalis was awarded third place as he had the best record (2-1) of the remaining fencers.

Leonidas Pyrgos (GRE)

The masters' foil event, the only event at the games for professional athletes, was held immediately after the amateur event. It consisted of a single match, between Leonidas Pyrgos of Greece and Jean Perronet of France. Pyrgos won the match, 3-1, to become the first Greek champion in the modern Olympics.

The sabre contest was held on 9 April, the fourth day of competition.

The five competitors were the Greeks Telemachos Karakalos, Ioannis Georgiadis, and Iatridis; the Dane Holger Nielsen; and the Australian Schmall. Ten matches were held. Each fencer faced every other fencer. Georgiadis was undefeated and thus won the gold medal. Karakalos had lost only to Georgiadis, while Nielsen had lost to those two and no others. Schmall's only victory was over Iatridis, who lost all four of his matches.
