Eudes IV, Duke of Burgundy
|
Eudes IV of Burgundy (1295–April 3 1350) was duke of Burgundy between 1315 and 1350.
Eudes was the second son of duke Robert II, Duke of Burgundy and Agnes of France. His maternal grandparents were Louis IX of France and Marguerite Berenger of Provence.
In 1318, Eudes married Jeanne of France. Jeanne was the eldest daughter of Philip V of France and Queen consort Jeanne II, Countess of Burgundy. Her paternal grandparents were Philip IV of France and Queen regnant Joan I of Navarre. Joanna was a great-grandaughter of Isabella of Aragon and Philip III of France, a brother of Agnes, Princess of France.
Eudes' new wife was his first cousin, twice removed. Only one of their sons survived childhood to become heir apparent Philip of Burgundy. In 1330, Duchess Joanna became 1330 heiress to the domains of her mother. Among them was Franche-Comté, County of Burgundy which was adjacent to Eudes' Duchy of Burgundy.
Eudes was a patron of the arts and the church and sponsored many young artists. He also endeavoured for good political connexions and by marrying a French royal princess assured the good relations with the neighbouring kingdom. The premature death of his son made his four year old grandson the heir apparent. He succeeded Eudes IV as Philip I of Burgundy.
