Current (4th) Edition

The current 4th Edition of the game is often referred to as Epic: Armageddon as this is the name of the first rulebook that has been released for this edition. This rulebook focuses mainly on Space Marines (Standard Codex Chapters), Imperial Guard (Mechanised) and (Common) Ork forces.

The second book is called Epic: Swordwind was released in hardcopy and is also available for form downloadable from the official website. This supplement requires Epic: Armageddon to play. This book focuses on Eldar (Biel-Tan Craftworld), Imperial Guard (Siegmaster units) and Feral Orks.

Future supplements are still planned but with the restructure of Fanatic these wil be available only as downloads, not printed books like the first two. While many new models have been released for the Armageddon and Swordwind armies, future model releases are now likely to be only re-releases of old models.

There is an active involvement of players with playtesting the new armies for the game on the epic forums, with Army Champions co-ordinating playtesting and revision of the army lists. Unlike other Games Workshop games that use more Generic Army Lists, Epic uses specific army list that were fielded for a specific military campaign.

Released Official Army Lists are:

  • Codex Astartes Space Marines (Armageddon)
  • Armagedddon Steel Legion - Imperial Guard (Armageddon)
  • Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka's Ork War Horde (Armageddon)
  • Da Cult of Speed (Ork) (White Dwarf Magazine)
  • White Scar Space Marines (Fanatic Magazine #03)
  • Eldar Biel-Tan Craftworld Army (Swordwind)
  • Baran Siegemasters Army - Imperial Guard (Swordwind)
  • Warload Snagga-Snagga's Feral Ork Horde (Swordwind)

Official Army lists in development are:

  • Adeptus Mechanicus Titan Legions
  • Chaos Lost & Damned (Cultists)
  • Chaos Space Marines
  • Craftworld Eldar (Alaitoc, Iyanden, Saim-Hann & Ulthwe)
  • Eldar Exodites and Harlequins
  • Imperial Guard (Catachan)
  • Necrons
  • Orkimedes Gargant Big Mob
  • Space Marines (Black Templars, Blood Angels and Imperial Fists)
  • Tau (Third Phase Expansion Force)
  • Tyranids (Hammans World Phase IV Subdual Army)

There are also numerous fan based lists in development.

Jervis Johnson in his designed notes states that his long term (and, it has to be said, rather grandiose) plans for Epic are to create a ‘family’ of games that use a common set of Epic miniatures. Each would be separate games using the same miniatures. The planned games in the family are:

  • Epic: Grand Tactical Combat in the 41st Millennium.
  • Adeptus Titanicus: Titan vs Titan battles.
  • Air War: Squadron level aerial combat in the 41st Millennium.

NetEpic Edition

NetEpic is an unofficial but popular fan version of the game based derived from the 2nd Edition rules, started maily because many fans did not like 3rd edition. It is a colabrative effort of fans through the NetEpic website and includes a broad range of armies based on models from all the other editions plus some. The NetEpic rules themselves are in their 4th Edition, with there fifth edition currently undergoing beta testing.

Heresy

This title refers to two editions of the game. Firstly a Games Workshop in house game that was abbandoned before 1st Edition Epic was created but latter used as a basis for 3rd edition. Secondly it is a more “gritty” game mechanics version of Epic produced by Peter Ramos co-ordinator of the NetEpic project and available from the NetEpic website.
