Epic 40,000
|
Epic 40,000 is a tabletop wargame made by Games Workshop set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. This is the 3rd Edition version of the Epic game system however that uses 6mm scale miniature units to represent massed battles, rather then Warhammer 40,000's 28mm scale small squad based engagements.
Games Workshop's Specialist Games (http://www.specialist-games.com/) division has since published a newer 4th edition of the game called Epic: Armageddon.
Due to unfortunate comments by the game's designers, fans regarded the 3rd edition to be a "dumbed-down" version of the highly regarded 2nd edition rules. While unit stats were simplified the actual game system itself was more complex than the 2nd edition. By focusing on groups of units at a time rather than resolving combat on a base by base basis the game was greatly speeded up while the addition of a more complex morale and order system allowed greater tactical play. A major visual change for this version was a change in basing from 20mm square to 40mm by 10 mm bases, for infantry the same number of model was used and the game rules did state figures based in the old method were allowed.
This version of rules was not very popular with fans, which led to a continued life of the 2nd edition rules as NetEpic [1] (http://www.netepic.org).
The PC game Final Liberation was based on this version of the game.
