Encyclopedia of Life Sciences
|
The Encyclopedia of Life Sciences is an encyclopedia of biology published in paper and online by Nature Publishing Group.
Overview
ELS has both a 20-volume print edition and an online edition. The online edition was launched in April 2004, with the print edition appearing in January 2002.
Articles are written by academics in their respective fields. As of November 2004, it contained almost 3000 articles, of which 470 had been added since its inception and 566 of which had been revised. Full access requires a subscription, though "free article of the week" is available, linked to a relevant Nature story.
Articles are of three levels:
- Introductory Articles are aimed at the level of British university undergraduates, American college freshmen/sophomores and non-specialist readers.
- Advanced Articles are aimed at advanced undergraduates, graduates and researchers.
- Keynote Articles are written from a personal point of view and discuss unique and often controversial topics of special interest in biology.
