Elko County is a county located in the state of Nevada. As of 2000, the population is 45,291. Its county seat is Elko6. The county was organized on March 5, 1869, being taken from Lander County.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 44,555 km² (17,203 mi²). 44,493 km² (17,179 mi²) of it is land and 62 km² (24 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.14% water. Most of the county lies within the Great Basin, with areas along the northern boundary draining into the Snake River Basin. The elevation ranges from about 4,300 feet at the edge of the salt flats of Great Salt Lake, to 11,157 feet in the Ruby Mountains. The Humboldt River has its source in Elko County and is a major water source for northern Nevada.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 45,291 people, 15,638 households, and 11,493 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (3/mi²). There are 18,456 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 82.04% White, 0.59% Black or African American, 5.30% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 8.50% from other races, and 2.78% from two or more races. 19.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 15,638 households out of which 43.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.30% are married couples living together, 8.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.50% are non-families. 20.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.85 and the average family size is 3.33.

In the county the population is spread out with 32.50% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 31.50% from 25 to 44, 21.30% from 45 to 64, and 5.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 108.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 109.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $48,383, and the median income for a family is $52,206. Males have a median income of $41,322 versus $24,653 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,482. 8.90% of the population and 7.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.50% of those under the age of 18 and 7.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
