East Hills, New York

East Hills is a village located in Nassau County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 6,842.

The Village of East Hills overlaps the Town of Oyster Bay and the Town of North Hempstead.

History

The settlement began around 1643. The village was incorporated in 1931.

Geography

East Hills is located at 40°47'39" North, 73°37'37" West (40.794052, -73.627051)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 6,842 people, 2,245 households, and 2,029 families residing in the village. The population density is 1,153.6/km² (2,991.5/mi²). There are 2,275 housing units at an average density of 383.6/km² (994.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 92.94% White, 0.80% African American, 0.01% Native American, 4.82% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 1.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,245 households out of which 46.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 84.4% are married couples living together, 4.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 9.6% are non-families. 8.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.04 and the average family size is 3.20.

In the village the population is spread out with 29.9% under the age of 18, 3.9% from 18 to 24, 23.2% from 25 to 44, 28.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 97.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $149,726, and the median income for a family is $159,316. Males have a median income of $100,000 versus $52,115 for females. The per capita income for the village is $59,297. 1.6% of the population and 1.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.1% of those under the age of 18 and 3.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
