Discovery-Spring Garden is a census-designated place and Census Designated Place located in Frederick County, Maryland. It is the combination of the two communities of Discovery and Spring Garden. As of the 2000 census, it had a total population of 2,152.
Geography
Discovery-Spring Garden is located at 39°27'50" North, 77°21'38" West (39.463960, -77.360581)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.5 km² (0.9 mi²). 2.5 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,152 people, 712 households, and 596 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 874.6/km² (2,258.8/mi²). There are 731 housing units at an average density of 297.1/km² (767.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 88.48% White, 7.53% African American, 0.05% Native American, 1.25% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 1.86% from two or more races. 1.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 712 households out of which 44.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.5% are married couples living together, 15.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 16.2% are non-families. 12.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.02 and the average family size is 3.26.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 31.5% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 5.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 96.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.4 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP is $50,656, and the median income for a family is $52,000. Males have a median income of $37,500 versus $27,409 for females.
