Brunswick, Maryland

Brunswick is a city located in Frederick County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,894.

Established along the now-defunct Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, the town grew as a railroad center. It now is home to a commuter rail station serving Washington, D.C..

Perhaps the most famous resident of the city was the American singer Patsy Cline, followed by cartographer Karl Musser.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²). 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.94% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,894 people, 1,866 households, and 1,306 families residing in the city. The population density is 895.5/km² (2,324.3/mi²). There are 1,957 housing units at an average density of 358.1/km² (929.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.09% White, 5.31% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. 0.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,866 households out of which 36.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% are married couples living together, 14.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% are non-families. 23.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 33.1% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $46,513, and the median income for a family is $53,232. Males have a median income of $36,304 versus $25,017 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,685. 3.7% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.8% of those under the age of 18 and 3.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
