Devil Fruit

The Devil Fruit (known as the Cursed Fruit in the English anime) is plot device from the anime and manga known as One Piece.

In short, these fruits are supposed to give people a specific super power when eaten. These powers differ vastly, but most seem to be pretty bizarre.

A side effect of eating a Devil Fruit is that one loses the ability to swim. In the setting of One Piece this is quite the problem, as most of the world is covered in water. Most towns exist on small islands and people have to use boats to get from place to place.

Fruits introduced so far, are classified into three different groups: Paramecia, Zoan, and Logia.

Paramecia, the most common, is often read as "Superhuman". These alter the user's body in some way. For example: Luffy's Gum Gum (Gomu Gomu) Fruit, which changes the user's body into stretchable rubber; also, Buggy the Clown's Chop Chop (Bara Bara) Fruit, which gives the user command over splitting apart his own body and controlling the pieces at will.

Zoan, from Zoanthropy, is the Animal Transformation Class. Most commonly, there are three forms available - Human, Animal, and a hybrid form. However, with the "Rumble Ball", developed by the Straw Hat Crew's Doctor, Tony-Tony Chopper, more forms can be utilized. Examples include the Tori Tori (Bird) Fruit, and the Ushi Ushi (Cow Cow) Fruits.

Lastly, but most certainly not least, is the Logia class - "Nature". With these fruits, the person who eats a fruit may actually become an element. In other words, the person would not only have command over an element in any way he or she wishes, but he or she may also change into said element to avoid damage. Both Crocodile (Suna Suna/Sand Sand) and Ener (Goro Goro/Shock Shock) have eaten Logia fruits. Others include Luffy's brother Ace, the Marine Captain Smoker, and the Supreme Admiral Blue Kiji.
