Demopolis, Alabama

Demopolis is a city located in Marengo County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 7,540.

Waldo Semon, an inductee of the Inventor Hall of Fame and the inventor of vinyl and holder of over a hundred patents, was born in Demopolis.

Demopolis was founded by a group of Bonapartists who, fearing for their lives after the fall of Napoleon Bonaparte, sought refuge in the United States. The U.S. Congress granted them 92,160 acres of public land on the Tombigbee River.

The 1949 John Wayne movie "The Fighting Kentuckian" is set in Demopolis and tells a story about an interaction with these French settlers.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 32.3 km² (12.5 mi²). 31.7 km² (12.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.00% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,540 people, 3,014 households, and 2,070 families residing in the city. The population density is 238.0/km² (616.4/mi²). There are 3,311 housing units at an average density of 104.5/km² (270.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 47.75% White, 50.90% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.20% Asian, none Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,014 households out of which 34.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.1% are married couples living together, 22.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.3% are non-families. 28.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the city the population is spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 81.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,481, and the median income for a family is $35,752. Males have a median income of $37,206 versus $20,265 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,687. 30.6% of the population and 26.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 38.3% of those under the age of 18 and 21.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
