Delaware State University is a historically black university in Dover, Delaware. It was founded in 1891. Delaware State University's athletic programs participate in NCAA's Division I (I-AA for football). The university's nickname is the Hornets. The Delaware State men's basketball team is the 2005 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champions. They went on to play Duke, a number one seed, in the opening round of the 2005 NCAA tournament as a number 16th seed. Even though they lost the game with Duke, 57-46, it was the first time any Delaware College team went to the NCAA Tournament.
