Carneys Point Township is a census-designated place and township located in Salem County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 7,684.
Geography
Carneys Point Township is located at 39°42'31" North, 75°28'20" West (39.708708, -75.472492)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 46.0 km² (17.8 mi²). 45.3 km² (17.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.41% water.
Carneys Point Township borders Oldmans Township, Pilesgrove Township, Mannington Township, Pennsville Township, and Penns Grove.
Carneys Point Township is connected to the State of Delaware by the Delaware Memorial Bridges over the Delaware River.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,684 people, 3,121 households, and 2,050 families residing in the township. The population density is 169.5/km² (439.1/mi²). There are 3,330 housing units at an average density of 73.5/km² (190.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 78.53% White, 16.27% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.91% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.10% from other races, and 1.89% from two or more races. 3.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,121 households out of which 28.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% are married couples living together, 12.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% are non-families. 29.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.99.
In the township the population is spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 91.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.3 males.
