Dan McTeague

Dan McTeague (b. October 16, 1962) is the Canadian Member of Parliament for the Ontario riding of Pickering—Scarborough East. He is a member of the Liberal Party of Canada.
He studied at the University of Toronto and worked as an intern to Paul Cosgrove, then Minister of Public Works and Canada Mortgage and Housing. After graduation he worked as an assistant to Alvin Curling, Ontario Minister of Housing. He was first elected to parliament in the 1993 federal election and was re-elected in 1997 and 2004. He served as the Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Industry and the Chair of the Liberal Committee on Gasoline Pricing. His private members bills making it an indictable offence to evade the police by motor vehicle, changing the Competition Act, and recognizing Organ Donor Week have all been passed by the legislature.
McTeague has taken populist political stances in Parliament that, while sometimes meeting with enthusiasm among constituents, have attracted criticism. McTeague has been a vocal opponent of Canada's landmark gay marriage legislation - among Liberal MPs, he has been one of the fiercest critics. He has been quoted to this effect in newspapers arond the world. Some have accused McTeague of intolerance (in press interviews he has downplayed the issue of minority persecution. McTeague and his supporters argue that they are concerned about the courts redefining marriage without popular consent. Some critics, nevertheless, believe that this position panders to homophobia in parts of the electorate.
McTeague and his wife Dr. Daniela Rossi have three children.
