Hiiumaa (Swedish Dagö) is the second largest island belonging to Estonia. It is located in the Baltic Sea, to north of Saaremaa island, belonging to the west Estonian archipelago.
Hiiumaa the main island of Hiiu County, called Hiiumaa or Hiiu maakond in Estonian. The Swedish and German name of the island is Dagö (day island). In Finnish it's called Hiidenmaa, literally devil's land.
It was held by Germans until 1563 (the Teutonic Knights partly acting on the behalf of the Hanseatic League), then by Sweden until 1710, when Russian expansion reached here.
