New Miserable Experience (1992) | Congratulations...I'm Sorry (1996) | — |
Congratulations...I'm Sorry, released in 1996 through A&M records is the Gin Blossoms's follow-up album to the immensely successful New Miserable Experience. It was produced after the head songwriter Doug Hopkins committed suicide.
Congratulations...I'm Sorry, while having sold over 500,000 copies, is regarded by critics as a major let down to the well-crafted pop of New Miserable Experience. Critics claimed the songwriting was less clever, more formulaic, and the Byrds-like guitar hooks from the first album were missing, excepting the hit single "Follow You Down." Both the suicide of Hopkins and high expectations left Congratulations...I'm Sorry less well-received.
