Colchester is a town located in Delaware County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,042.

History
Colchester was formed from part of the Town of Middletown in 1792.
Geography
The south town line is the border of Sullivan County, New York.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 368.3 km² (142.2 mi²). 355.9 km² (137.4 mi²) of it is land and 12.4 km² (4.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.35% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,042 people, 837 households, and 547 families residing in the town. The population density is 5.7/km² (14.9/mi²). There are 1,587 housing units at an average density of 4.5/km² (11.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.53% White, 0.34% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 0.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 837 households out of which 24.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% are married couples living together, 7.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% are non-families. 29.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.86.
In the town the population is spread out with 21.0% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 22.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.9 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $32,147, and the median income for a family is $37,895. Males have a median income of $27,143 versus $20,694 for females.
