The Citroën Xsara was an automobile made by Citroën from 1997 to 2004. Like its predecessor, the Citroën ZX, it was based around the running gear of the Peugeot 306. It came in hatchback, estate and coupé body styles.
The 1.4, 1.6, and 1.8 petrol engines were sourced from its Peugeot twin and gave reasonable refinement, performance and economy. A 1.9 turbo-diesel engine was also available. Prices were also competitive, although build quality and reliability were not of the highest standard.
The Xsara hatchback and coupé have been replaced by the C4. However, as of 2005, the estate version is still produced, and should not be replaced when it is phased out.
Citroën Xsara WRC
The Citroën Xsara is a major competitor in the World Rally Championship. On October 17, 2004, French driver Sebastien Loeb won the Driver's Championship using the Citroën Xsara WRC at the Rallye de France. Thanks to the Xsara WRC, Citroën has won the Manufacturer's Championship in 2003 and 2004.
Citroën Xsara Picasso Mini-MPV (1999-present)
The Xsara Picasso was Citroën's answer to the Renault Scénic when it went on sale late in 1999. It was spacious, comfortable and practical. The rear seats could be removed to create extensive stowage space, and the interior was full of gadgets which had found their way from a large people carrier into a package the same size and price as a small family car. It soon became the bestselling MPV in France, Britain, and most of the rest of Europe.
The Xsara hatchback having been replaced by the C4, a Picasso replacement should appear by 2006. It is expected that the new vehicle will exist in both short and long wheelbase.
