Peugeot 306

The Peugeot 306 is a sub-compact car manufactured by Peugeot, which replaced the Peugeot 309. It was originally launched in March 1993 and was replaced by the 307 in 2001, although the cabriolet and estate both remained on sale until 2002. The 306 shared its chassis with the Citroen ZX and the ZX's replacement, the Xsara.
The 306 is identical mechanically to the Citroën ZX, which was launched two years earlier, and both cars use the same floorpan and core structure. Using the familiar PSA powertrains to drive the front wheels, the 306 was criticised for lacking in design flair, since it was intended to partially replace the 205. Initially, the car was only available as a hatchback, but sedan, station wagon (estate) and convertible bodystyles became available in later years.
The 306 GTi6, released in 1996 mated a 167bhp 2.0 litre engine with a class-leading 6-speed gearbox to produce the flagship of the Peugeot range, both in handling and speed. The less powerful 2.0 litre S16 was also highly regarded by those who drove it. Going against the appeal were high maintenance costs and flimsy build quality.
Until the launch of the Ford Focus in 1998, the 306 was widely regarded as having the best ride and handling characteristics throughout the range of any car in its class.
