Cheboygan, Michigan

Cheboygan is a city located in Cheboygan County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,295. It is the county seat of Cheboygan County6.

The city is at the mouth of the Cheboygan River on Lake Huron. U.S. Highway 23 connects with Interstate 75 at Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge, about 15 miles to the northwest. Rogers City is about 41 miles to the southeast. Michigan State Highway 27 runs south from the city along the north shore of Mullett Lake to I-75 at Indian River about 18 miles to the southwest. Michigan State Highway 33 runs due south along the east shore of Lake Mullett to Michigan State Highway 68 about 20 miles to the south.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.1 km² (7.0 mi²). 17.6 km² (6.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.72% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,295 people, 2,146 households, and 1,349 families residing in the city. The population density is 301.1/km² (779.5/mi²). There are 2,365 housing units at an average density of 134.5/km² (348.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 91.80% White, 0.51% African American, 4.12% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 2.91% from two or more races. 1.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,146 households out of which 31.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.4% are married couples living together, 14.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.1% are non-families. 31.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $25,033, and the median income for a family is $32,692. Males have a median income of $28,417 versus $19,559 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,318. 19.9% of the population and 15.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 31.0% of those under the age of 18 and 9.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
