Catharine is a town located in Schuyler County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,930.

History
The town was formed in Chemung County before the formation of Schuyler County. Catherine was taked from the Town of Elmira in 1798. Part of Catherine was used to form the Town of Veteran in 1823, as well as other towns.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 85.2 km² (32.9 mi²). 83.7 km² (32.3 mi²) of it is land and 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.82% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,930 people, 755 households, and 526 families residing in the town. The population density is 23.1/km² (59.7/mi²). There are 865 housing units at an average density of 10.3/km² (26.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.79% White, 0.57% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 755 households out of which 33.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.0% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% are non-families. 23.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.00.
In the town the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.1 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $36,207, and the median income for a family is $41,979. Males have a median income of $29,191 versus $24,327 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,496. 11.6% of the population and 10.4% of families are below the poverty line.
