Carrollton, New York

Carrollton is a town located in Cattaraugus County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,410. The name comes from an early settler.

The Town of Carrolton was incorporated in 1842, formed from the Town of Great Valley. It is on the south border of Cattaraugus County.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 109.6 km² (42.3 mi²). 109.5 km² (42.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.02% is water.

The Allegheny River flows through the town. The south town line is the border of Pennsylvania.

The Southern Tier Expressway (Interstate 86 and New York 17) passes across the town.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,410 people, 553 households, and 383 families residing in the town. The population density is 12.9/km² (33.3/mi²). There are 639 housing units at an average density of 5.8/km² (15.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.82% White, 1.56% African American, 1.56% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 1.63% from two or more races. 1.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 553 households out of which 31.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% are married couples living together, 9.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% are non-families. 24.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 103.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $31,290, and the median income for a family is $40,313. Males have a median income of $28,854 versus $19,861 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,678. 14.4% of the population and 9.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.9% of those under the age of 18 and 12.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Allegany Reservation -- A reservation of the Iroquois is partially in the western section of the town.
  • Allegany State Park -- A part of this park in the western section of the town.
  • Carrollton -- The hamlet of Carrollton, formerly a station on the Erie Railroad is in the northwest part of the town on Routes 219 and 417.
  • Irvine Mills -- A hamlet south of Seneca Junction and north of Limestone on Route 219.
  • Limestone -- The Village of Limestone in the south part of the town.
  • Riverside Junction -- A hamlet west of Route 219 by the Allegheny River.
  • Seneca Junction -- A hamlet at the junction of Routes 219 and 417, north of the Expressway.
  • South Carrollton -- A hamlet on Routes 219 and 417 south of Carrollton.
  • South Vandalia -- A hamlet near the east town line on Route 30.
  • Tuna -- A former community in the town.
  • Vandalia -- A hamlet on the east town line on Route 417.
