Carlisle, Iowa

Carlisle is a city located in Warren County and Polk County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,497.

The city received considerable media attention in 1997 when Carlisle residents Kenny and Bobbi McCaughey (pronounced "McCoy") became the parents of the world's first surviving set of septuplets.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 km² (4.3 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,497 people, 1,338 households, and 974 families residing in the city. The population density is 311.8/km² (807.8/mi²). There are 1,379 housing units at an average density of 123.0/km² (318.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.06% White, 0.17% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,338 households out of which 38.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% are married couples living together, 11.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% are non-families. 23.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $47,528, and the median income for a family is $53,924. Males have a median income of $39,286 versus $26,162 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,467. 3.3% of the population and 2.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.5% of those under the age of 18 and 9.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
