Café Naturale is the seventh album by Australian singer Wendy Matthews.
Making of the Album
The album is a version of cover versions of songs selected by Matthews and Michael Szumonski. They chose the tracks after playing the songs with the band they selected for the album including:
- Brett Hirst on bass - worked with jazz musician Vince Jones and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra;
- Felix Bloxsom on drums - Alex Lloyd and Sia;
- Brendan St. Ledger on piano - Delta Goodrem and Marcia Hines; and
- Jak Housden on guitar - the Whitlams.
On her website, Matthews says that she tried a new approach recording Café Naturale acoustically. "To keep creative you have to break down your own personal barriers. With this record that meant moving away from pop and crafting something instrument-driven, something that feels like me playing live. [1] (http://www.wendy-matthews.com/main.htm/1) The album was recorded in Tiger Studios in Sydney and Matthews used a microphone used by Frank Sinatra on his 1950's Australian tour.
The album includes acoustic versions of a number of well-known songs including U2's "One" from the Achtung Baby album and Massive Attack's "Protection" from the 1994 album of the same name. The first single "All I Need" is a version of the Air song from the 1998 Moon Safari album. The album debuted in the top 50 of the ARIA charts in May 2004.
