Brookfield is a town located in Orange County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,222. Brookfield is best known for its floating bridge which spans Sunset Lake bouyed by pontoons. The bridge, which is the only floating bridge east of the Mississippi River, was originally built in 1820 by Luther Adams and his neighbors.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 107.9 km² (41.7 mi²). 107.2 km² (41.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.65% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,222 people, 475 households, and 351 families residing in the town. The population density is 11.4/km² (29.5/mi²). There are 602 housing units at an average density of 5.6/km² (14.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.63% White, 0.16% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.98% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 0.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 475 households out of which 32.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.3% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.1% are non-families. 17.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 30.0% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 100.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $45,515, and the median income for a family is $51,071. Males have a median income of $34,464 versus $24,258 for females. The per capita income for the town is $21,502. 6.1% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.9% of those under the age of 18 and 5.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
