British Sea Power

British Sea Power are a five-man band from Brighton, England. They are an indie rock band, similar in sound to both David Bowie and The Smiths. They have also been compared to Joy Division and Talking Heads.

The band is made up of Yan (vocals/guitar), Hamilton (vocals/bass), Noble (lead guitar), Eamon (keys/marching drum) and Wood (drums). For some of their early gigs they dressed in uniform, most frequently RAF Jackets and Navy flairs. The band have somewhat bizarre interests, ranging from Field Marshal Montgomery and Charles Lindbergh to Czech architecture.

Equally strange are the band's live performances, during which the stage is covered in foliage and plastic birds, part of a strong fascination with nature that informs the lyrics to many British Sea Power songs. Many members of the band's devoted fanbase share similar eccentric interests, including the self-proclaimed "Third Battalion", who follow the band on tour and often attend gigs dressed in military uniform.

They released their debut album, The Decline of British Sea Power in 2003 to critical acclaim. However, the album only charted in the lower reaches of the UK Top 75 Album Chart. The follow-up, Open Season, was released in early April 2005, and enjoyed wide critical praise. Lead single "It Ended on an Oily Stage" charted in the upper half of the UK Top 40 Singles Chart a week earlier.

Their latest video, "Please Stand Up", was banned from playing on MTV because they thought the lyrics "wetter and wetter" would be offensive to some viewers. This is being touted as another case of oversensitive censorship.
