Blount County is a county located in the U.S. state of Alabama. As of 2000, the population is 51,024. Its name is in honor of Willie G. Blount, who served as Governor of Tennessee. Its county seat is Oneonta.

History
Blount County was established on February 6, 1818.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,685 km² (651 mi²). 1,672 km² (646 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.77% water.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 51,024 people, 19,265 households, and 14,814 families residing in the county. The population density is 31/km² (79/mi²). There are 21,158 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (33/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.08% White, 1.19% Black or African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.07% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 5.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 19,265 households out of which 34.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.50% are married couples living together, 7.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.10% are non-families. 20.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.02.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 29.20% from 25 to 44, 24.10% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 99.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.30 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $35,241, and the median income for a family is $41,573. Males have a median income of $31,455 versus $22,459 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,325. 11.70% of the population and 8.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.20% of those under the age of 18 and 17.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
