History

First appearing in 1993, the Beretta 96D Brigadier was designed for the United States INS agency. In order meet the INS requirements, Beretta modified a slide it had designed for the Beretta 92F when that pistol had slide breakage problems. This new Brigadier type slide is heavier and stronger where the locking block engages and has a removable front sight as on the Beretta 92CB.

Specifications

The INS demanded a heavier slide to reduce muzzle flip, a removable front sight and a pistol that was adapted for high volume shooting. The INS also wanted a double-action only pistol.

Intended market

The Beretta 96D Brigadier was designed for US Federal law enforcement agencies. It remains a pistol designed for police use and is not being sold directly to civilian users.

Design advantages

The Beretta 96D Brigadier was designed for high volume shooting. Like other Beretta 96s, it is very reliable. With no manual safety it is fast into action. The heavier slide reduces muzzle flip and the stronger locking block area enables it to shoot many more rounds than a standard Beretta 96. Like the Beretta 96 it is fitted with a reversible magazine release button which makes it well suited for left handed users. The barrel bore is hard chromed to reduce wear and corrosion on the standard model.

Limitations

The Beretta 96D Brigadier is not fitted with a manual safety, this makes unloading somewhat less safe. Like all designs originating from the Beretta 92, the Beretta 96D Brigadier dislikes deserts, jungles and arctic regions. The surface of the barrel is prone to corrosion and the frame to slide play increases as the Bruniton finish wears off on the inside of the slide.
