History
First appearing in 1993, the Brigadier models came into being after the Beretta 96D Brigadier slide was adapted to the Beretta 92FS.
Specifications
The Brigadier models are fitted with a heavier slide that is stronger in the locking lug area, this reduces muzzle rise and speeds up follow up shoots. Except for the slide being heavier by about 60 g and 1 mm wider and having a removable front sight, the Beretta 92FS Brigadier is identical to the Beretta 92FS in its function.
Intended market
The Beretta 92FS Brigadier was primarily designed for high volume shooting sports like combat shooting. Being very similar to a standard Beretta 92FS it is also suited for military, police or self-defense use.
Design advantages
The Beretta 92FS Brigadier with its slide mounted decocking and manual safety is very easy to load and unload in a safe fashion. With the safety on, the slide can be manipulated without the risk that touching the trigger would fire the pistol as the trigger is disconnected. The safety is also accessible on both sides of the slide, a feature that enables left handed users to easily use the Beretta 92FS Brigadier. The magazine release button is reversible, another feature that allows left handed users to make the most out of the Beretta 92FS Brigadier. The Beretta 92FS Brigadier retained the reliable function from the Beretta 92FS, properly oiled, cleaned and maintained it would hardly ever fail to function in a moderate climate. The barrel bore is hard chromed to reduce wear and corrosion on the standard model. The Inox version uses a stainless steel barrel without the hard chromed bore.
Limitations
The Beretta 92FS Brigadier has similar limitations as the Beretta 92FS. It is not well suited for use in deserts, jungles and arctic areas. While it will perform quite well in such harsh environments, any negligence in spring maintenance and cleaning will reduce its reliability. The Bruniton finish applied on the Beretta 92FS Brigadier wears down quickly which leads to corrosion and more slide to frame play. The barrel surface, unprotected in the open slide is prone to corrosion. The Beretta 92FS Brigadier Inox, made out of stainless steel eliminates the corrosion problems and also the slide to frame play problems as there is no Bruniton to wear away.
