The name Aud has several well-known connotations:
- In Norse mythology, Aud was the son of Nott and Naglfari.
- In the Viking Age, Aud the Deep-Minded (Icelandic: Auður djúpúðga Ketilsdóttir (834-900 CE) was the wife of Olaf the White of Dublin, "King" of Ireland. After his death, she travelled the British Isles and ultimately to Iceland, where she founded Hvammur í Skeggjadal (commonly translated as "Hvamm").
- In the fictional Buffyverse (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Aud was the original mortal name of Anyanka, a vengeance demon who came to be known as Anya. Coincidentally, she also had a lover named Olaf, but the fates of these two couples were considerably different.
