Auburn University gets its name from the town in which it is located, Auburn, Alabama. It gets its nickname "Tigers" from line 355: "Where crouching tigers wait their hapless prey". AU is also called "the loveliest village on the plain", as referenced in the first line of the poem.
The poem was about the village Athlone, Ireland, Goldsmith's childhood home. He lived in Lissoy Parsonage, which was also called Auburn.
The term auburn is sometimes used to describe a colour. When used about hair, it is most often a reddish brown. Some internet browsers recognize it as a HTML colour name.
